Have fun. Go skating.
The main concern in purchasing children skates is the fact that children tend to out grow thier skates in a short period of time. However some parents try to buy a much larger size so the child will get more time out of thier skates but this is not always a smart choice. Many parents tend to get the skates 2 or 3 sizes too big and use the excuse "they can just wear 2 pairs of socks." The major problem with this choice, beside the childs foot slipping inside the boot and causing blisters, is that if the skates are too big the front axle is in front of the ball of the foot. This makes its very difficult for child to learn how to skate correctly. The best way to determine if the size is right is to take the inner sole out of the skate and have the child position thier foot at the very back of the inner sole while standing up and have about a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the end of the toe to the end of the inner sole.
Parents should be aware that there are several brands of inexpensive skates sold in stores that do not have real bearings. The wheels on these skates so not roll properly and the child can only walk. When purchasing roller skates it is best to be sure that the wheels spin 5 to 10 times around and do not wobble. Usually you can tell if the bearing is good if it is made of metal. Beware of skates that have plastic bearings since these will not roll.
Types of children skates vary from tennis shoe skates to high top skates. The low cut shoes are much easier to put on while the high top gives better ankle support and usually has a better plate which allows for better control over your skates. For children that wear sizes 1 - 4 they have the option of speed skates. These skates are a little more expensive because they are higher quality but really allow the skater to go faster as well as skate better.
It is strongly reccomended if you are interested in purchasing skates for your children that you determine which type of skates your child will get the best and most comfortable use out of. In any circumstance you need to purchase the correct size of skates for your child. Please remember we only sell skates that have real bearings and have the proper mechanisim for adjustment so the skates will be able to make correct edges.
